Gameplay in Action

An In-Depth Look at One Turn in Gambit

You and your teammate are deep into an intense showdown with Chess. The Obsidian Queen has battered your units and appears out of reach...

It’s the beginning of Round 4...

You're playing: Wingspan
(birds provide tactical support and mobility)

Your teammate: Champions of Midgard (Vikings bring raw power and fury)

The enemy: Chess!

The battlefield is a hex-based grid where your Faction Leaders—a Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher and the berserker Ullr—command their forces.

Each leader has a Command Radius of a set hex number and layout where you can give direct orders to your units and play powerful cards.

Phase 1: Draw and Position

Both you and your teammate draw back up to 5 cards.

You're holding:

  • Peregrine Falcon
(fast attacking bird)

  • Sounds of the Forest
(powerful buff card)

  • Northern Mockingbird
(versatile support unit)

  • Food - Fish
(resource card)

  • Powerful Wings
(mobility enhancement)

Faction Leader
Movement

Phase 2: Focused Command

You:
Drag the Sounds of the Forest action card onto your teammate's berserker, giving it +400 attack power!
(1 FP remaining)

You:
Select your Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher's special ability and drag it to the berserker to extend its movement range.
(0 FP remaining)

You move your Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher two spaces forward, expanding your Command Radius toward the action.

Your teammate advances Ullr the Berserker, getting closer to the enemy lines.

This is where the magic happens.

You each get 3 Focus Points to spend, coordinating your strategy, whether you're playing in real-time together or taking turns asynchronously.

You:
Drag your Peregrine Falcon card onto the board near the enemy to spawn the unit and have it immediately swoop in for an attack.
(2 FP remaining)

Phase 2 Ends (all Focus Points spent)

Phase 3: Automatic Action!

Phase 4: Chess Strikes Back

Teammate:
Drags their berserker unit down the board to order it to move forward.
(2 FP remaining)

Teammate:
With extra movement and attack power, drags their Berserker to attack the Castle. It crumbles into dust.
(1 FP remaining)

Teammate:
Issues new movement orders to units to position for next turn
(0 FP remaining)

Units outside your Command Radius and those with standing orders activate automatically based on their individual units attributes.

Your Northern Mockingbird moves to support position.

The Obsidian King gets his turn with 5 Focus Points. He moves his rook and plays "En Passant" on his pawn.

It’s clear losing his Castle has forced him to retreat and restrategize.

Endless Gameplay Potential

In this turn, your birds provided the extended range and extra firepower. With your help, your teammate’s berserker got into lethal striking range on the Obsidian Queen, crippling the enemy’s next turn.

Not only is every turn in Gambit unique, every faction brings new playstyles and mechanics so you can mix and match to discover new ways to bring the fight to the enemy!
