Faction Spotlight: Bringing Board Games to Battle

In this episode, Lead Game Mechanics Designer Fletch reveals how Gambit turns beloved board games into fully realized, playable factions—each one preserving the tone, tactics, and feel of its original source. From the aggression of Viking warriors to the thoughtful synergy of sanctuary-building birds, every faction in Gambit is crafted with respect for what made the tabletop version shine.

  • Translating Game Personality into Playstyle:
Fast, aggressive games become brawling frontline factions. Slower, tactical games become support factions focused on defense, healing, and control. Each Gambit faction reflects the core identity of the board game it came from.

  • Champions of Midgard → The Viking Faction:
With dice-driven combat and a bold Viking theme, this faction was a natural fit. Unit cards double as combat dice when held in hand, giving players ways to contribute even when they’ve hit their deployment limit.

  • Wingspan → The Bird Faction:
This cozy engine-builder translates into a supportive faction where players build nests that emit area buffs and use food resource cards to cycle their hand. Wingspan’s emphasis on synergy becomes a key part of its Gambit identity.

  • Design With Purpose:
For Fletch and the team, adaptation isn’t about copy-paste mechanics—it’s about translating essence into interactive, digital systems that feel true to their source while thriving in a new format.

Next time, meet Art Director AJ, who’ll walk us through how Gambit’s world gets its look and feel.
